Check out this detailed Garmin Montana 700i Review & Field Test.
Montana 750i Introduction
Other than the Garmin GPSMAP 67i, this is probably the most powerful device that Garmin has created. Let me list some of the features the Montana 700i/750i has to offer:
- Off-road Navigation
- Global 2-Way Messaging
- Interactive S.O.S.
- Full QWERTY Keyboard
- Routable Topographic Maps
- Meets MIL-STD 810 for Thermal, Shock, Water and Vibration
- Birdseye Satellite Imagery
- Inreach Weather Forecasts
- Outdoor Maps+
- City Navigator Maps
- Topoactive Maps
- Additional Maps with 16 GB of Onboard Memory
- Micro SD Card for Expandable Storage
- Public Land Boundaries
- ABC Sensors
- Active Weather
- Dog Tracking
- and Much More…
Menu Layout
The menu layout is extensive but you can customize it to help you navigate it more easily. Here is an example of what you will see when the Montana 700i or 750i is delivered to you.
S.O.S.
The S.O.S. function is easy enough to access. It is one of the few hard keys built into the outside of the device. All you need to do is to is have a subscription and then open the cover and depress the key for about 3 seconds, then the IERCC will contact you and get search and rescue teams dispatched to your location.
Two-way Messaging
I never thought I would care much for 2-way messaging as I don’t like to be bothered on my hikes with people messaging me, but what I have found out is that my family and friends do leave me alone to enjoy the outdoors, but I do have the convenience of messaging people for important reasons, up to and including life threatening emergencies.
Here are some examples of recent messages I have sent with the Garmin Montana 750i.
City Navigation
There are two options for City Street Navigation. They are City Navigation and BaseCamp.
Weather
There are two types of weather on the Garmin Montana 700i/750i. They are:
inReach Weather
Active Weather
Active weather gives you a lot greater weather detail but you must be in WIFI or at least Cell Service to get it.
Navigation
There is a lot more on navigation here than I will cover today, but I will go into this in more detail in the future in the Montana 750i training playlist, but I want to add here that using the Course Planner is my favorite way to create Courses/Routes and Garmin has said the Courses is the new and better way to navigate by.
Here are a few screenshots of what it’s like to navigate on the Montana 700i/750i with the Course Planner.
Final Thoughts
This is a powerful, but large satellite communicator, and I only use it in my truck when heading off-road here in Colorado. You may want to consider putting it on your backpack, but I think it’s too large for that. I would look at the Garmin GPSMAP 67i if you will be packing this on hiking adventures.
