What Are the Top 5 Satellite Communicators categorized by outdoor activity?
Let’s rank what I believe to be the top 5 satellite communicators on the market by the outdoor activity they are best suited for.
Sporting Dogs
If you have dogs you want to track in the outdoors then the Garmin Alpha 300i may be the best satellite communicator for you.
This Alpha 300i can track up to 20 dogs, with each dog having it’s own name and color. You will be able to see all of them on a top map on the device, up to 20 miles away.
But remember, you will need a collar for each dog and you can choose from a tracking collar or a tracking/training collar.
Off-roading & ATV’s
If you’re a serious off-roader or you like riding ATV’s then the Garmin Montana 700i / 750i may be the best satellite communicator for you.
This is one of the largest satellite communicators with a touch screen and turn-by-turn instructions, whether you’re in the mountains or driving in the city.
Is Communication Your Priority?
If communication is your priority, then the Garmin inReach Messenger may be the best pure communicator on the market.
The Messenger will automatically switch between WIFI, Cell Service and Satellite Service without you having to do anything. Plus, you can TracBack, get weather, and 2-way message from the device, without being synced to your smartphone.
Day Hikers
The Garmin inReach Mini 2 may be the best satellite communicator for day hikers in my opinion.
This little device is power packed with features, especially when you sync it with your smartphone.
It has great TracBack features built-in to the device, plus you can navigate, get weather forecasts and message easily on the device and on the Messenger App.
A lot of people like this for multi-day hikes, but I prefer it for my shorter outdoor adventures.
Multi-day Backpackers
If you want an all-in-one device that has topo maps on it, a great battery life, and doesn’t have to be synced to your smartphone, then I would like to introduce you to the Garmin GPSMAP 67i.
I initially didn’t think I would want these many features on a device, but after using it over the last few years, it has become my favorite satellite communicator.
It’s easy for me to create courses on the device or in the Explore App, plus the worldwide maps are incredible and I love having the additional detail when using Outdoor Maps+.
I especially like to see the Public Land Boundaries and the Hunting Units.
Final Thoughts
These satellite communicators are some of the best on the market, and it’s hard to rank them from best to worst, because the top of the line is dependent on what your outdoor activities are.
