The Look and Feel
Both the GPSMAP 66i and the SPOT X are large devices. You can see them side-by-side in the image below plus I’ll post some specs below that.
You can see that these devices are about the same height and weight, but the SPOT X is about 0.5 inches wider and the 66i is about 1 ounce heavier, but this is where the similarities stop.
What the 66i has Over the SPOT X
There are several things that give the Garmin GPSMAP 66i a major advantage over the SPOT X. First, the 66i has global, pole-to-pole coverage. Second, you can see pre-downloaded topo maps on the GPSMAP 66i. Lastly, you can get detailed weather forecasts on the 66i.
There are many more differences, but these are the most obvious differences.
Final Thoughts
I do like the SPOT X and the new SPOT Gen4, and you’ll be happy with these satellite communicators if you buy one, but if you haven’t made that decision yet, then may I suggest you take a harder look at the Garmin GPSMAP 66i?
I have tested the 66i extensively, along with many other Garmin Communicators and I only use the Garmins now as my satellite messengers when I head out on my outdoor adventures.
