The NUMBER 1 Reason to Have a Satellite Messenger/Communicator!
The most important reason to have a satellite communicator is to be able to call S.O.S. if you find yourself in a life-threatening situation or if you need to contact someone with 2-way messaging if in trouble but if it’s not life-threatening.
All the other functions, such as weather or topo maps are not life-threatening, but only a nice convenience.
IERCC SOS Test
Once you by a satellite communicator, you should contact IERCC and setup an S.O.S. test. This test is easy to set up and will give you a lot more confidence how it works if you ever find yourself in a situation to use it.
I set up my own test and now have a lot more confidence in how it works and how fast they contact you.
Real Life Examples
I have had several close calls on outdoor adventures over the last thirty years. Here are a few of them.
- Arkansas Hiking Trip – Came within two feet of a large rattlesnake.
- Arkansas Hiking Trip – Came within one foot of a water moccasin
- Colorado Hiking Trip – Altitude Sickness at 12,000 feet with no one around
- Colorado Hiking Trip – Son needed help to get off the mountain after a long hike
These are only four of the ones I can recall, but I’m sure I could add a few more to my list. It’s no wonder my wife wants me to have a satellite communicator when I head into the mountains.
Final Thoughts
I was on a hike in 2019 in the Rocky Mountain National Park when I came across another hiker that had a satellite messenger on him. This is the first time I hand heard of such a thing.
I asked him about what it was and he told me it was a SPOT Gen 3, and it gave his wife a lot of comfort knowing she could see where he was and know that he could call for help if he found himself in a life-threatening emergency.
It was soon after this that I bought my own satellite communicator. I have never been without one since then on any of my outdoor adventures.
