S.O.S.

Both devices have an S.O.S. button to contact search and rescue teams.

2-way Messaging

They are two-way messengers, but the SPOT X has a built-in keyboard to make creating a unique message easier to type. The Mini 2 uses the Garmin Messenger App that will automatically connect to WIFI, cellular service, or satellite service.

Weather Forecasts

Garmin offers weather forecasts, through Dark Sky, and here are some examples of what you will get if you request a forecast on the Mini 2.

Here is what the weather forecast looks like when synced with your smartphone, using the Explore and Messenger App.

SPOT does not offer weather forecasts on the SPOT X, however, I have seen at least one third party that offers weather forecasts when you send them a message. I’m not sure about the cost associated with this.

Apps

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 uses the Explore App and the Messenger App. The SPOT X uses the SPOT App. Both of these apps makes using each device much easier.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, they are both invaluable to help in life threatening emergencies, but after that, they are extremely different.

The Mini 2 has access to maps and additional navigation functions that the SPOT X does not have. If you have any questions or would like advice on what satellite communicator may be the best for you, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment below.
